1992 A Year in focus

Journal de l’année – MSF F – FRENCH

Commentary: On 25 June 1991, Slovenia and Croatia declared independence, Yugoslavia broke up, the former federal army attacked Croatia and there was full-scale war in Dubrovnik, Osijek, Zadar and Vukovar. The MSF team were the first to enter beleaguered Vukovar in October. Their task was to evacuate 300 seriously injured victims and MSF obtained safe passage for the convoy from the military officials. But as it advanced with its first load of casualties, one of the trucks struck an anti-tank mine and two nurses were seriously injured. A long journey later, the Vukovar survivors finally arrived in hospitals in Croatia. MSF maintained its operations in Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia.
